| Band Biography Stefan Olsdal and Brian Molko knew eachother from school. But they did not talk with eachother, because they were in different social circles.
Steve Hewitt and Brian Molko got to know eachother because of a girlfriend. They first met at Burger King.
One day in 1994 Stefan Olsdal and Brian Molko met again at South Kensington Station. They talked for a while and where surprised to find out that they had much more in common then they would have ever guessed. Brian invited Stefan to come to a little gig he played together with Steve Hewitt the same evening. Stefan came and really liked their music and offered himself as bass player, because that was what the duo missed. So they formed their first group "Ashtray hearts". But renamed it after a while, because Brian imagined that it sounded better when thousands of people screamed PLA CE BO instead of ASH TRAY HEARTS.
They recorded a few demo songs and started to play one gig after another. That was the time Steve had to leave the band, because he was still the drummer for a breed and was not able to play as much gigs as Brian wanted to. But Steve's friend Robert Schultzberg joined the band. They recorded a demo album and sent it to different record labels and while their demo went from hand to hand they toured all over England and soon made themselves a name in the music scene. At some fateful day their demo reached David Bowie. When he prepared his Outsiders tour his support act Morissey cancelled and Bowie remembered Placebo. He invited them to tour with him and for sure they did not say no. That was in 1996 at the same time Plaecbo finished their first album, simply called Placebo, which was recored in 3 weeks in Scottland. They toured with bands and musicans such as Bowie and U2 in 1996 and 1997. Though they were sucessfull the band had to go through a crisis. The chemicals between Brian Molko and Robert Schultzberg became worse and so Robert left the band 1997. Stefan and Brian had to search for a drummer and got a list with 3 people they wanted to ask. On top of the list was no other than Steve Hewitt. Brian phoned him and Steve came back. The first released single was Nancy Boy which became a hit in the UK and reached no.4 in the charts. They toured some more and started recording Without you I'm Nothing, which was released 1998 and became extremly succesfull. They released singles, which were hits like Pure Morning, Every you every me (the soundtrack for the movie Cruel Intentions) and of course Without you Im nothing, which got David Bowie on Vocals. After touring the world on Without You Im Nothing tour they went straight back into the studio to record Black Market Music. They produced Black Market Music by themselves and it was the album which needed the most time to get finished. They spent nine months in the studio, but after this time they released the album in 2000, which was their most sucessful so far. They went on world tour for 1 1/2 years and visited every continent. After this enormous tour they needed a bit time for themself and went on a 6 months break. But during this break they worked already on new ideas and songs. They started to record the album in summer 2002 and when they were finished they told the public they had so many songs that they could release a double cd. But sadly only 12 songs made it on the album, which was called Sleeping With Ghosts and was released in March 2003. As soon as it was released they started to tour the world again and shortly after the release it was clear that this album was even more sucessful than any album before. They released the hit singles The Bitter End, This Picture and Special Needs in 2003 and autumn of 2003 they released a special version of Sleeping With Ghosts, which featured an extra cd with covers of old songs. Sleeping With Ghosts reached the top of the charts in very many countries, such as France, England, Greece, Germany and Spain. Placebo will finish their worldtour in Novemeber and the new album will be released in 2006. To make the wait shorter for the fans they released a Singles Collection in autumn 2004 |
